- Job Overview
- The Legal Officer (In-House Counsel) will be responsible for providing expert legal advice and support to the company, ensuring compliance with legal and regulatory requirements, and managing legal risks associated with the company’s construction projects and operations. The role involves drafting, reviewing, and negotiating contracts, handling disputes, advising on corporate governance, and supporting the management in various legal matters. The ideal candidate should have a strong background in construction law and experience working in the construction or real estate industry.
- Key Responsibilities
- Contract Management
- Draft, review, and negotiate construction contracts, subcontracts, vendor agreements, and other legal documents.
- Ensure contracts are in compliance with legal, regulatory, and company requirements.
- Manage contractual disputes and provide strategic advice to minimize risk exposure.
- Regulatory Compliance
- Monitor changes in construction and real estate laws, regulations, and industry standards.
- Ensure the company’s operations comply with relevant laws, regulations, and industry codes.
- Provide guidance on compliance issues and develop policies and procedures for regulatory adherence.
- Litigation and Dispute Resolution
- Manage litigation, arbitration, and mediation proceedings related to construction disputes, including contractor claims, defects, and delays.
- Liaise with external counsel and manage legal costs effectively.
- Develop strategies to resolve disputes efficiently while protecting the company’s interests.
- Risk Management
- Identify legal risks in the company’s operations and construction projects, and develop strategies to mitigate those risks.
- Provide proactive legal advice to the management team to avoid potential legal issues.
- Assist in insurance claims and risk management processes related to construction projects.
- Corporate Governance and Compliance
- Advise the company on corporate governance best practices and regulatory compliance.
- Draft and maintain corporate policies, procedures, and guidelines.
- Support the preparation and review of board resolutions, minutes, and other governance documents.
- Legal Advisory
- Provide legal support and advice on a range of matters including property acquisition, leasing, zoning, permits, and licenses required for construction projects.
- Assist in negotiations with stakeholders, government bodies, and external partners.
- Advise on labor law and employment issues specific to the construction industry.
- Documentation and Record Management
- Maintain legal files, records, and documentation for the company’s construction projects.
- Ensure proper filing and archiving of legal documents to facilitate easy retrieval.
- Manage and safeguard confidential legal information.
- Qualifications and Experience
Education:
Bachelor’s degree in Law or equivalent. Master’s degree in Law or specialization in construction law is an added advantage.
Professional Qualification:
Member of PERADI would be an advantage.
Experience:
- Minimum of 2 years of experience in a legal role, preferably in the construction, real estate, or infrastructure sector.
- Strong knowledge of construction law, contract management, and regulatory compliance.
- Experience managing litigation, arbitration, and dispute resolution processes.
Skills and Competencies:
- Strong drafting, negotiation, and analytical skills.
- Excellent problem-solving abilities and attention to detail.
- Ability to manage multiple tasks and work effectively under pressure.
- Strong interpersonal and communication skills with the ability to work collaboratively with different departments.
- Proficiency in legal research and using legal databases.
- Working Conditions
